Jefferies analysts dropped a bombshell Wednesday, forecasting a $50 price increase across most iPhone 17 models launching in September. The iPhone 17 Pro Max, currently starting at $1,199, would jump to $1,249 under this scenario. This marks the first significant Pro model price hike since 2019.
The predicted increases stem from escalating U.S.-China tariff pressures and rising component costs. Approximately 40% of iPhone 17 units for the U.S. market are still assembled in China. As a result, Apple faces mounting import duties that previous iPhone generations avoided.
“If the cost of building each iPhone 17 rises by $20 to $25 due to tariffs and supply chain adjustments, a $50 retail price bump would only slightly cover the increased overhead,” Jefferies noted. The base iPhone 17 appears exempt from price increases. It maintains its $799 starting point to compete with mid-tier Android alternatives.
Anti-Reflective Display Returns from the Dead
In more encouraging news, Apple has reportedly solved production issues that previously killed the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s anti-reflective display technology. According to MacRumors sources, suppliers have achieved sufficient yields to mass-produce the specialized glass coating for both Pro models.
The technology promises to reduce screen glare by up to 75% while improving scratch resistance beyond current Ceramic Shield protection. This puts Apple on par with Samsung’s Gorilla Glass Armor technology, which has garnered praise for outdoor visibility improvements.
